The 2018 Farm Hemp Bill

1. What is the 2018 Farm Bill?

The 2018 Farm Bill is a piece of federal legislation that, among other things, legalized hemp production in the United States. This law officially removed hemp from the list of controlled substances, separating it from marijuana, as long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis.

2. What does the Farm Bill mean for hemp products?

Under the bill, hemp and hemp-derived products (including CBD, THC-A, and other cannabinoids) are federally legal if they meet the THC limit. This means businesses like Teddy Gramz can legally market and sell compliant hemp products nationwide.

3. What is THC-A, and how does it relate to the Farm Bill?

THC-A (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a naturally occurring compound found in raw hemp and cannabis. On its own, THC-A is non-psychoactive. However, when heated (decarboxylated), it can convert into THC. The Farm Bill allows THC-A products to be sold as long as the final product remains within the 0.3% THC limit.

4. Does this mean hemp is legal in every state?

While the Farm Bill legalized hemp at the federal level, states still have the power to regulate hemp and hemp products locally. Some states have additional restrictions on CBD, THC-A, or smokable hemp. Always check your state and local laws.

5. How is hemp different?

  • Hemp: Contains less than 0.3% THC. Used for CBD, THC-A, wellness, textiles, food, and more.

  • Marijuana: Contains more than 0.3% THC. Remains federally illegal, though many states have legalized it for medical or recreational use.
